Transfer Case
Four wheel drive and all-wheel drive vehicles are equipped with a transfer case. The transfer case is a component that transfers engine power from the transmission out to both the front and rear differentials to provide improved traction. Some transfer cases can be shifted into a lower gear range when more pulling power is necessary.
There are different types of transfer cases for different types of vehicles. In most four wheel drive vehicles, the transfer case can be shifted from two wheel drive into four wheel drive when the driver feels they may need more traction. Some transfer cases can electronically engage themselves from two wheel drive into four wheel drive automatically by the vehicles computer when it senses a loss of traction. In all wheel drive vehicles, the transfer case provides engine power to the front and rear differentials at all times and allows the differentials to rotate at different speeds from one another in order to maintain smooth power transfer on dry, non-slippery surfaces.
Keeping the transfer case full and routinely changing the fluid or gear lube on the transfer case is critical to ensure 11maximum life and performance of the unit.
